A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, October 27, heard
the case of a 42-year-old man who allegedly defiled and impregnated his
12-year-old daughter.
The accused, Akate Thomas reportedly had sexual intercourse with his two daughters, 12 and 10 years old.
Omaye Ujata, the prosecuting officer, said one Francis Omanga reported the case to the police.
Ujata told the court that the 42-year-old got one of the girls impregnated as a result of the “constant forceful sexual intercourse.’’
The prosecutor further disclosed that Thomas threatened to kill the girls if they ever let the secret out.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, when the charge was read.
Mr David Agada, the ruling magistrate, granted the accused bail in
the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum, who should be a blood
relation.
The case was adjourned till Monday, November 16, for further hearing.
Recent media reports indicate that cases of incestuous relationships in Nigeria are on the increase.
On Wednesday, October 28, the case of a 35-year-old trader, was brought before a Senior Magistrates’ Court in Katsina state.
The trader, Maharazu Ali, was arraigned for allegedly impregnating a minor.
The accused, who resides at Kwamgaya village in the Mani local
government of Katsina state, was arraigned on a one count charge of
rape.
According to the police First Information Report (FIR), one Mahuta
sent a petition to the Katsina state commissioner of police, stating
that the accused had impregnated his 13-year-old daughter.
The FIR explained that the petition was forwarded to the Criminal
Investigations Department (CID) on Thursday, September 17, pleading for
investigation into the matter.
Nafisa Bagiwa, the magistrate, refused to take the “not guilty” plea of the accused, earlier heard.
She ordered the case file to be forwarded to the state’s ministry of justice for advice.
The case was adjourned till Wednesday, November 4.
